Superbug scare - how to fight the superbug, which is resistant to powerful antibiotics? We believe the answer is still in a powerful, robust Immune system. We are again reminded of the importance of a strong immune system to fight infections, with the discovery of another superbug. Consider how a gene causes bacterium to create an enzyme which destroys powerful antibiotics. The drug-resistant "superbug" originated from South Asia has caused the death of a Belgian man. The superbug is a critical bacteria and presently there is not much known about it. In the study in the British medical journal "The Lancet Infectious Diseases" said a new antibiotic-resistant enzyme had emerged in India, Pakistan and Britain. Medical tourism may be helping to it to spread internationally. The enzyme, is named New Delhi metallo-beta lactamase (NDM-1), and may lead to fatal multiple organ failure. Published reports gave examples of surgery as a way that the gene could be transferred from humans to a bacteria. The Lancet report, based on laboratory studies in the three countries, reported that the superbug may have originated in India. The Belgian victim was infected by the bacteria receiving treatment in Pakistan and died in June. The enzyme was found in bacteria such as E.coli, which can result in urinary tract and respiratory infections. The gene can easily jump from one bacterium to another. Medical experts fear the new bug is resistant to almost all antibiotics and there are none in development which can combat it. The new bug is even resistant to the class of antibiotics known as Carbapenems normally reserved for use when all other antibiotics have failed. The bacteria containing the NDM-1 gene had been found in 37 Britons who had received medical treatment in South Asia, while three cases have been reported in Australia. Belgian hospitals have stepped up vigilance against the bug, particularly among patients who have been hospitalised overseas, several hospitals said. Help for a friend? Long periods and superbug? Can anybody tell me about MSSA. A not so well known superbug?
